Join us on a delightful half-day journey to two of Cantabria’s most picturesque villages—Carmona and Bárcena Mayor. Both of these gems have earned recognition as two of the most beautiful villages in Spain and are designated as Historic-Artistic Sites, thanks to their preserved heritage and enchanting natural surroundings. This tour is a perfect blend of history, culture, and serene landscapes tucked away in the lush inland heart of Cantabria.
Our adventure begins in Carmona, nestled in the verdant Nansa Valley. This charming village feels like a step back in time, with its cobbled streets, traditional stone houses, and characteristic gable roofs. As we explore, you’ll discover the timeless beauty of its mountain architecture, including highlights like the parish church of San Roque and the impressive Mier Palace. Surrounded by rolling green hills, Carmona's peaceful setting and rich traditions offer an authentic glimpse into Cantabria's rural past.
Next, we’ll travel to Bárcena Mayor, located in the magical surroundings of the Saja-Besaya Natural Park. This beautifully preserved village is one of the finest examples of Cantabrian rural architecture, with stone houses, slate roofs, quaint palaces, and an iconic bridge that seems straight out of a storybook. After a guided walk through its most charming streets, you’ll have time to relax, sample local gastronomy, or simply take in the tranquility of this enchanting village embraced by nature.

Fortunately due to rain and covid there were not many people in the town during my visit, so I was able to appreciate the beauty of the place which apparently normally would be buzzing with tourists.

The most beautiful Town in Cantabria is Barcena Mayor. Beautiful ❤️❤️ place to visit.

it's just like traveling back to Medieval era, it's one of Cantabria's oldest villages, it's a protected place you can't drive in there, you have to leave your car at the parking.

Beautiful little village, neat and authentic, fills like an open air museum. On Sundays it can be crowded, but when we visited by in September it was not so full of people (it was late afternoon). There is a large parking in front of the village, still quite a lot of cars were on the streets spoiling overall impression a bit.

Beautiful and very well preserved village. The downside is that it has become very touristy and has somehow lost part of its charm. All the houses are in the traditional Cantabrian style. It is a great location for hiking, as there are several walks that start off from the village. Try to avoid weekends when it can get quite crowded. There are many other villages in the Cabuérniga valley that, in spite of not being as picture perfect as Bárcena Mayor, are really worth seeing.
