Inis Oirr, the smallest of the Aran Islands, is known for its distinctive charm and is the perfect destination for exploring traditional Irish life. The island is located near the Burren, with its unique mix of colours, and the Cliffs of Moher are clearly visible in all their panoramic splendor. Inis Oirr has the authentic feel of a secluded fishing village, where time seems to slow down. Upon arriving at the pier, visitors are greeted with a pristine white sandy beach, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and plenty of fishing boats. The sight of fishermen returning with their catch adds to the island's picturesque atmosphere. The main village lies close to the beach and is protected by a small hill with a castle and fort at the top, as if watching over the island’s residents and visitors.
The island is 3 km by 3 km, with small hills and winding valleys, making it easily navigable by foot or bike. Walking to the lighthouse or the shipwreck of the Plassy offers a wonderful experience, allowing you to take in the island’s diverse landscape. Within the village, you’ll find a strong local community that still adheres to traditional Irish customs. The island also features a traditional music bar, known for its fine music and vibrant nightlife. In addition, there is an arts center, Aras Eanias, which offers courses in traditional music and art.
Accommodation on the island includes both hotel and bed and breakfast options. It is recommended that visitors book their accommodation before arriving. Ferries to Inis Oirr are available year-round from Rossaveal and seasonally from Doolin, near the Cliffs of Moher, from April to October.
