Easy to buy tickets here directly rather than online. In October we turned up 30 minutes early and had plenty of time to board and find the ferry.
We really enjoyed our time in Sorrento - we actually stayed in Priora which is in the hills behind the town surrounded by lemon groves and there was a regular shuttle linking the hotels on the road to Sorrento. The main port is great for shuttles to places like Capri and Ischia and there is a good road towards Naples and sites like Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius. The town itself is worth strolling around but in all honesty it is not a place for a beach holiday; it is however a great base for visiting the Amalfi coast with and towns like Positano.
Beware of taxi scam at Sorrento ferry port (Marina Piccola). Driver tried to charge €10 per person for a short ride into town, even though local taxis should charge a flat fare per ride, not per person. I took a photo of the license plate and asked for a receipt — he returned the money immediately. Always confirm the total price before getting in. Sorrento is beautiful, but stay alert around the port.
