Discover the Authentic Craftsmanship Behind World Famous Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese Near Historic Modena Italy

Step into the heart of Italian culinary tradition with an exclusive guided visit to a historic Parmesan cheese factory located near the cities of Maranello and Modena. This immersive experience offers a rare behind the scenes look at the meticulous production process of Parmigiano Reggiano, one of the most celebrated cheeses in the world. You will gain deep insights into the heritage and craftsmanship that have been carefully passed down through many generations of local artisans.

The tour begins early in the morning, with an ideal start time of 8:30 AM, which allows visitors to witness the most critical stages of the daily cheesemaking process. Inside the main production room, you will observe large copper cauldrons where fresh milk is transformed into curd. If you arrive promptly, you may see the exciting moment when skilled workers lift the heavy fresh cheese wheels from the vats to begin their long journey toward perfection.

As the tour progresses, your expert guide will explain the complex separation of whey and the creation of the solid cheese mass. You will walk through the specialized salting and resting rooms, where the wheels absorb the precise amount of salt required to develop their signature flavor profile. Even if you arrive after the initial morning production, the facility remains a fascinating environment where the history and science of cheese production are clearly visible and explained.

The final stage of the experience focuses on the months of patient aging required to achieve the distinct texture and taste of authentic Parmigiano Reggiano. You will see rows of aging wheels stacked in climate controlled environments, reflecting the dedication required to produce this iconic Italian product. This educational journey concludes with a tasting session, providing a perfect opportunity to appreciate the final result of this labor intensive process before you depart from the factory grounds.

We had an amazing tour of a local cheese farm that is family owned. Learning about how stringent making Parmigiano Reggiano was very fascinating. It takes 1200L of cows milk to make just 2 x 45kg of Parmigiano Reggiano! After the cheese tour, you get a nice sampling of different aged parm. Highly recommend if you want to see what a cheese factory looks like.

Interesting and fun tour. Different options for cheese tastings (different aging ranges, with or without wine). The store has lots of local products. We made a reservation several weeks in advance. We called to confirm the same morning, and were told to come. When we arrived, they said there was no reservation but they can still host us. So, it's recommended to get written confirmation ahead of time.

This tour was so much fun. We were the only people on the English speaking tour and our guide had perfect English. She was so knowledgeable about the process and we saw every step of the journey from milk to parmigiano reggiano. We even got to go outside and meet the cows. The tasting is huge so don’t have lunch before! Served with lovely mortadella and salami cold cuts and tigelle and Lambrusco. We bought a 36 month aged slice to bring home. Would definitely recommend!
