This four-night, five-day adventure on the Gila River offers a rare opportunity to explore the heart of the world’s first designated wilderness. The trip follows the legacy of early environmentalist Aldo Leopold, whose work preserved much of the Gila Wilderness for future generations. This region represents a unique transition zone between the Chihuahuan Desert and the Rocky Mountains, where mesquite and ocotillo share space with ponderosa and apache pines. Participants will experience pristine rivers, hot springs, and diverse wildlife, including Mexican wolves, black bears, and numerous bird species. The journey combines kayaking, canoeing, and oar-boat rafting through largely untouched landscapes, offering a true wilderness experience far from the crowds.
Each day offers a blend of river adventure, exploration, and relaxation. Day one begins with a scenic shuttle from Silver City to the river put-in, followed by a safety briefing and launch. Over the following days, participants will navigate the Gila’s inner canyons and class II-III rapids, enjoying side hikes, wildlife viewing, and evenings by riverside campfires. The trip culminates on day five with a final float and take-out at either Turkey Creek or Mogollon Campground, depending on water levels. This adventure is ideal for active and outgoing individuals aged 12 and older who are prepared for paddling, hiking, camping, and possible swimming. The experience emphasizes both thrilling river navigation and immersive wilderness enjoyment.
