Join a unique and immersive whale-watching experience designed to give you a firsthand look into the world of marine research alongside Pacific Whale Foundation’s researchers and marine biologists. Departing from Maʻalaea Harbor between January and March, this special 2.5-hour adventure offers an intimate, small-group setting that is ideal for whale watching and photography. Guided by a Certified Marine Naturalist, you’ll learn how researchers study humpback whales, observe their behaviors, and understand the importance of the data being collected during each tour. Every trip is different, making each outing a memorable experience as you listen to expert commentary and gain a deeper appreciation for these magnificent giants of the sea. A continental breakfast is included, and children must be at least 5 years old to participate.
The meeting point and check-in location is the Pacific Whale Foundation Ocean Store at the Maʻalaea Harbor Shops, next to the Maui Ocean Center, with check-in required 45 minutes prior to departure. The tour includes underwater hydrophones to hear whale songs, an onboard Junior Naturalist Program for kids, unlimited filtered water, juices, and sodas, free marine wildlife postcards, and a whale sighting guarantee that allows you to return for free if whales are not seen. Affordable camera and binocular rentals are available, and parking policies should be reviewed upon arrival. Guests are encouraged to bring sunglasses, a hat, and a light jacket, and should note that vessels and retail stores are cashless, except for gratuities. Alcohol policies are strictly enforced, and tours are subject to weather and sea conditions, with all reservations being non-refundable and changes not permitted within 48 hours of departure.
