The Lackawanna River begins in the southeast corner of Susquehanna County, where its east and west branches flow into Stillwater Reservoir just south of Union Dale and north of Forest City, before flowing through the lower 40 miles of Lackawanna County. Renowned as a wild brown trout mecca, the Lackawanna River offers more fish-filled public water than nearly any other river in Pennsylvania. The 37 miles of river below Stillwater Dam support strong populations of mostly wild, naturally reproducing brown trout, with little to no private water restricting access. Notably, nearly 18 miles of this stretch are officially designated by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission as either Class A or Trophy Trout water, making it one of the premier trout fisheries in the state.
