Those who live in the Washington, D.C. area are fortunate to have one of the most stunning cathedrals in the world right in their backyard: the Washington National Cathedral. Begun in the early twentieth century with a cornerstone laid by President Theodore Roosevelt and completed many decades later, its magnificent limestone structure represents one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture. This safari offers photographers the chance to explore the Cathedral’s breathtaking interior during the early morning light, when sunlight streams through the south-facing stained glass windows, famously known as the “Jewels of Light.” These beams of color illuminate the stone columns, walls, and floors, creating abstract and vibrant compositions that are perfect for both smartphone and professional camera photography. Participants will also have the opportunity to photograph the Lower Crypt, the adjoining Bishops Garden, and exterior architectural details, capturing the grandeur of the Cathedral from multiple perspectives. Guided by professional architectural photographer E. David Luria, attendees will learn to use their cameras in Manual Mode for optimal exposure, master color filtration techniques using the Kelvin color temperature scale, and take advantage of both wide-angle and telephoto lenses to enhance composition. This hands-on experience also includes insights into the stories and symbolism of the stained glass windows, helping photographers create meaningful and visually striking images. The session emphasizes both technical skill and artistic expression, allowing participants to leave with a portfolio of cathedral photographs that reflect both their vision and the Cathedral’s extraordinary beauty. Your fee includes a contribution to the Cathedral’s earthquake repair funds, supporting the preservation of this historic landmark.
