Salt is the only edible stone found in nature, which makes the Salt Valley of Añana a truly unique cultural site with over 6,500 years of history, currently in the process of becoming a World Heritage Site. In the morning, the tour begins at the Salt Valley, located east of Vitoria-Gasteiz, where participants will learn about salt and its properties. A guided tour of the valley includes the salt springs, the salt production process—particularly active in the summer—and the Salt Spa, where visitors can soak their hands and feet to enjoy its therapeutic benefits. The visit concludes with a tasting of different types of salts, such as mineral salt, Arbequina salt, and wine salt, before transferring to Vitoria for a traditional lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, participants will visit the Gothic-style Cathedral of Santa María, perched atop the hill where the original city was founded above the village of Gasteiz. This architectural gem is internationally renowned for inspiring the sequel to Ken Follett's “The Pillars of the Earth,” and a guided tour is included. The experience continues with a guided walk through the old part of Getaria, visiting the Church of San Salvador and learning about the Basque naval legacy, including stories of important sailors like Juan Sebastián Elcano. The tour also includes a visit to a Txakolindegui, where participants will learn about the production of this traditional Basque wine and enjoy a tasting. After a traditional fish-based meal, the day concludes with a visit to the museum of the famous designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, rounding out a full day of cultural, culinary, and historical immersion.
