“Scary-Funny Improv” Workshop Explores the Intersection of Horror and Comedy in Amsterdam
A new four-week creative workshop in destination is inviting performers to explore the unusual intersection of horror and comedy through improvisational theatre. The course focuses on developing “scary-funny” performance skills, blending suspense, humour, and theatrical storytelling into a single expressive form.
Led by Simon Lukacs, alongside director of horror-inspired improv team Uncanny Valley, and technical director Emil Struijker-Boudier, the programme offers participants guided training in crafting atmosphere-driven comedic horror scenes.
Across four intensive sessions, a small group of up to ten students will experiment with techniques that blend tension and humor. The curriculum explores how pacing, tone, and staging can be used to build suspense, while also identifying comedic potential within unsettling or surreal scenarios.
Participants are encouraged to develop exaggerated characters, experiment with contrasting performance styles, and work with theatrical elements such as lighting and sound design. The workshop emphasizes collaboration and improvisation, aiming to help students create performances that balance fear and laughter in unexpected ways.
