SSI Boat Diving Specialty Expands Access to Offshore Dive Adventures

Boat diving opens the door to some of the ocean’s most spectacular and remote underwater sites, many of which cannot be accessed from shore. The SSI Boat Diving Specialty program is designed to prepare divers for safe and confident diving from a variety of vessels, ranging from small local boats to large liveaboard dive operations.

By training as a boat diver, participants gain access to offshore environments that often feature richer marine biodiversity, including schooling pelagic species and larger oceanic animals rarely seen in nearshore waters. These excursions also provide opportunities to explore less crowded dive sites and experience extended diving trips, often accompanied by scenic ocean travel and open-water sunsets.

The program combines online learning with practical open-water experience, focusing on essential skills such as safe entry and exit techniques, equipment handling on board, and adapting to varying sea conditions. These competencies are crucial for ensuring comfort and safety while diving from moving or open-water platforms.

Upon successful completion, divers receive the SSI Boat Diving Specialty certification. This qualification enables them to confidently participate in boat-based diving operations worldwide, significantly broadening their access to diverse and rewarding underwater environments.
