If you’re looking for a tour guide who is as knowledgeable as he is pleasant, then Derek Smith is your man. He curated a trip that exactly matched what my wife and I hoped to see in Ireland—natural beauty like the Kilkee Cliffs, off-the-beaten-path destinations such as the Choctaw Memorial, and points of interest specific to Ireland like the Waterford Crystal Factory, all the while sprinkling in historical facts and stories to enrich the experience. He also offered plenty of excellent recommendations for dining and entertainment. And of course, he handled all of the driving but also covered logistics to make sure we arrived at museums or ferry rides with no need to wait. No matter the weather, Derek always brought a sunny personality that made our tour enjoyable from start to finish. I highly recommend Derek’s services and will definitely look him up if we’re ever in Ireland again.

We were fortunate to have the privilege of having Derek guide us across Ireland, from Shannon to Dublin. His insight and experience were invaluable and allowed us to experience the country in a way that would not have been possible on our own. He knows the best places and times to go to the various sights, the “secret” ways to have the most private experiences possible, and the best restaurants and pubs (and each one’s best dishes) at each stop along the way. The drives between each location were filled with knowledge and anecdotes, and we most appreciated the obvious love he has for his country and his time spent sharing that with us. Several weeks later, we’re still not sure if the hardest part of the trip was leaving Ireland or leaving Derek!
Derek took my family (including an active and inquisitive 12 year old son) from Shannon to Kilkenny over an 8 day tour of the gorgeous Irish countryside. Having Derek plan out the itinerary, our days, and drive us in his comfortable van was essential to traveling safely on the narrow Irish country roads (left sided! We could not imagine driving these roads ourselves) and his in-depth knowledge of Irish history, landscape, and culture was incredible. His experience, stories of childhood and life in Ireland and wide range of connections helped to create an even richer voyage across the Emerald Isle. We were able to avoid crowds at the Cliff of Moher, see Neolithic structures, explore medieval castles, take a hurling class, enjoy the best food at local pubs (he has excellent restaurant recommendations), and more importantly enjoy experiences that we otherwise would not have been able to find ourselves. Favorites included the Dingle Peninsula, Cahir Castle, the beehive huts, the Portal Tomb/Burren, and all of the Irish stews in cozy pubs and delightful stories. Would 100% look up Derek again on future trips to Ireland- my son now wants to do the northern route with him after such a positive and educational experience.
