The Only Aurora Tour I Would Chose At the end of September 2025 we booked Aurora tours with Janne (Northern Light Riders) on 2 different nights (if the weather had cooperated we would have done more). Prior to the trip Janne and I had multiple emails/Whatsapp messages about his tours and what to expect. Auroras are a passion of his and it made everything better. He talks a mile-a-minute while telling us about the Auroras. I know the science of Auroras but he knows where to go to find open skies and scenic backdrops for the colors in the sky. During the tour he refers to some apps on his phone and his knowledge of the area; while we re-positioned to 3 locations. We booked our first tour for our 2nd night in Finland; but due to 100% cloud cover and light rain; he delayed taking us on the tour for 3 straight nights. I found that to be great!! If there was NO chance of seeing an Aurora; I would much prefer spending the evening in our nice cabin with a large private sauna and a fireplace. The 4th night the weather and the Auroras cooperated; the tour was a GO. We saw some Auroras at the hotel while waiting for him to pick us up. There was just one Big problem; I got food poisoning from dinner at the hotel. I decided to stay in the cabin and let my wife and the others enjoy the tour with causing a disruption. Before heading out with the others, Janne lead me toward the lake and pointed out where I should look (based on the weather that night). He was correct; I did get to see some with reflections off the lake; but I was so sick I just went back to the cabin. My wife and the others saw some great Auroras. Janne also provides 30-40 photos from his very good Nikon from each tour. In 2 nights the predicted Kp index was 5; which is much higher than normal. After my wife's great experience on the tour; we decided to stay an extra night in Finland; forfeiting our airline tickets from Kirkenes to Oslo and a non-refundable night at the Radisson in Oslo and book another tour with Janne. So I was going on a tour. The Auroras actually started before he arrived and then burst out right above the hotel just as he arrived. Since the Auroras were showing, we stayed at the hotel until they diminished. We then moved to his property that overlooks another lake. They were very visible; We finally went a good ways out a lonely road to see some more Auroras. Participants on the tours need to understand the the beautiful photos we see published are what the camera sees. The Auroras are much more vivid with a camera; our eyes only saw hints of color in the whispery Auroras. They did move around and changed between photos. Sometimes big changes in 15 seconds. You need to increase the exposure on the camera to between 1.5 to 3 seconds and really increase the ISO setting of the camera. So a tripod is required or you will just get photos the look like colored paint strokes without any details . It might have been possible to get some photos with my Samsung 25Ultra but it would have required a tripod plus ISO 3200 which is its max. while my Nikon D7500 goes up to 51,200 and I shot most at ISO 3200. Max. ISO causes lots of noise color specks in a photo. The attached photos are from my camera; I am happy with the results since I had never taken night sky photos before. Based on our experience; I would not select an Aurora tour that went to a fixed location. Northern Light Riders looks for the Auroras and does their best to get you to the best locations. They appear to be the only tour company that works that way between Inari, Ivalo and Saariselkä.
I absolutely love this local company for their genuine passion! I joined two tours in February 2025, both of which were unforgettable. Janne was our guide, and his enthusiasm and knowledge about the northern lights were fantastic. He took us all the way to the border of Norway to ensure we saw them. He captured many photos and sent them to us in original resolution within 12 hours. After picking us up from our hotel, he drove 100 km to the viewing site and back, making the total trip over four hours long. We enjoyed hot drinks and cookies, which added a cozy touch. I highly recommend this company for anyone looking for a fun adventure! The private tour to Norway for king crab catching was also wonderful. On the way, Janne treated us to delicious homemade meatballs at a charming neighborhood supermarket near the border.
