Upper James River Four-Day Wilderness Expedition Offers Scenic Multi-Day River Adventure

This four-day wilderness adventure takes paddlers along the Upper James River Water Trail, offering a rich combination of scenic beauty, light rapids, and remote camping experiences. The journey begins just below the confluence of the Jackson and Cowpasture Rivers, where the James River is formed, setting the stage for an immersive multi-day expedition through Virginia’s scenic river corridor.

Over the course of four days, participants cover a total of 44.3 miles, with carefully planned daily distances: 7.8 miles on day one, 17.5 miles on day two, 15 miles on day three, and 4 miles on the final day. The route includes primitive campsites along the river and access to resupply points on days two and three, allowing paddlers to maintain a balance between adventure and preparation.

Throughout the journey, participants navigate enjoyable rapids while traveling through long stretches of remote wilderness and designated Virginia Scenic River sections. The experience is designed to help families and groups disconnect from everyday life and fully immerse themselves in nature while paddling and camping along a peaceful yet dynamic river environment.

The package includes boat rental, paddles, life jackets, safety orientation, river maps, dry bags, five-gallon water jugs, private camping access, and all required shuttle services. Participants are responsible for bringing personal camping gear and food, emphasizing self-sufficiency while still benefiting from logistical support. The trip concludes with a final shuttle pickup at 10:30 AM at Alpine, offering a structured and memorable end to this extended river expedition.
