Colorado is an exceptional destination for ice climbing, offering climbers the thrilling experience of ascending frozen waterfalls and other ephemeral ice formations. The state’s diverse mountainous terrain and winter conditions create opportunities to climb year-round, allowing participants to develop their skills in a high-altitude environment. With guidance from experienced instructors, climbers can learn essential techniques such as using crampons and ice tools effectively, maintaining balance on vertical ice, and establishing the rhythm needed for safe and efficient ascents. Whether you are trying ice climbing for the first time or looking to refine advanced techniques, Colorado provides a variety of climbing experiences suitable for all skill levels while showcasing stunning alpine scenery.
The San Juan Mountains near Lake City feature some of the state’s most popular ice climbing locations, including the Ice Park, which is ideal for learning and progression, as well as expansive backcountry climbs for advanced participants. The Front Range offers accessible venues that are perfect for less committing climbs or skill-building sessions. Climbers can progress from introductory routes to multi-pitch climbs such as The Sherman Route or tackle challenging mixed and alpine climbs that combine rock and ice. Serving all areas of Colorado, we can help climbers of any experience level find the perfect location, ensuring an exciting and rewarding ice climbing experience across the state.

Genuinely the best experience I’ve had all year! I am a local to the area, and this was definitely a great adventure day! Callum was an awesome guide, and he made our excursion so much better! He had lots of info about the area, and was very patient, as it was our first time on the Via Ferrara. Would 110% recommend!

Base camp provided our family an excellent adventure on the Gold Mountain via Ferrata! Our guide Spence got us set up with equipment at the store and gave us easy to follow instruction on some practice lanes. That made us comfortable in the process and that we knew what we would be doing on the via Ferrata. Spence was also great on the mountain got our entire group through the trail and was very patient with our youngest climber. Rex was also very helpful and got us set up with gear for a self guided via Ferrata. We did the Ouray downstream via Ferrata a few days later and had a great time putting our experience from Gold Mountain to use. We had a great time in Ouray and would go with Basecamp guides again! Appreciate the good times and good vibes from the guides and staff here.

I came to Basecamp on my last two Ouray trips, to do via ferrata and hiking. Rex helped us both times, he's amazing. Friendly, helpful, enthusiastic, has great advice for via ferrata beginners. Gold Mountain was great.

Our group was incredibly impressed by this experience. We came with the particular challenge of having 8 kids between 7 and 13 and the guides here gave our families a once in a lifetime experience. So creative and incredible. Every person in our group was challenged and encouraged. The guides were so incredibly knowledgeable. I can’t say enough good things about this company. Our kids said on the way home they’d rather go climbing than to Disneyland on their next vacation. Extra shout out to guides Jason, who gave our little 7 year-old with special needs the climbing bug for sure, and to Logan, who made this experience so personal for us by sharing his world throughout the climb. You guys are awesome.

Can't say enough about this experience. Took the whole family up gold mountain via ferrata. Six of us all beginner's ages10-43. The guides Nico and Logan (jedediah Walsh) :) exceeded all expectations and gave my family the greatest experience I could have asked for. They even created a scavenger hunt along the way for my 10 yr old daughter. Serious fears were faced and my wife and kids now know they can conquer any obstacle. I could'nt be more Greatful for the team at Basecamp Ouray Mountain guides.
