The San Juan Mountains boast some of the most rugged and picturesque terrain in Colorado. Known for their dramatic peaks, deep valleys, and remote wilderness, these mountains provide a climbing experience that feels both adventurous and secluded. While climbing opportunities are abundant throughout the range, the areas we highlight focus on crags located in the alpine valleys near local mountain communities. These spots offer not only high-quality rock but also easier access to amenities, making them ideal for climbers who want a balance between challenging routes and convenient support.

Climbers visiting the San Juan Mountains can expect a mix of terrain, from steep faces to technical cracks, all set against the backdrop of stunning alpine scenery. The remoteness of many routes adds an element of adventure, requiring preparation and self-sufficiency. At the same time, the proximity to mountain communities provides opportunities to rest, refuel, and explore local culture between climbs. The combination of rugged wilderness, varied climbing options, and welcoming alpine valleys makes the San Juan Mountains a distinctive and rewarding destination for climbers of different experience levels.

This is an absolutely awesome find. Located inside The Rec and with challenging bouldering sets plus a couple of rope routes. Patrick is very engaging and attentive and is also fantastic with the climbing kids. Its great to see these local climbing communities!

Honestly one of the coolest lil gyms! I love that there’s a climbing gym on this island!! The routes are so much fun(also jam packed) and Pat (the gym owner) is such a gem, he’s super helpful and I could tell he was super passionate about climbing! He even told me that Climb San Juan hosts a climbing trip every year. Also, the mural on the wall is super beautiful and was painted by local artists! Wow! What a magical addition to the magical island!

Cute gym. Pat, the owner, had great vibes and energy. Perfect place to climb on vacation. Good variety of holds and strong wall texture. Grading was on point compared to other gyms in western Washington I’ve visited before. The other climbers were nice. Considering it‘s such a small space, there’s a fair amount of routes with differing grades (difficulty) and styles. I really loved the wall angles and unique diamond shape feature wall.

This wall was bigger then what I thought it would be. I was able to climb for an hour before I got to a point where i was just projecting the upper grades. This place has a lot of potential especially if they make the routes denser and change some of them weekly. Look forward to seeing how it evolves!

Visited from out of town and was surprised to see a climbing gym had popped up! The owner was very friendly and the routes were fun and reasonably rated. Ratings varied between V0 - V8 (I think I saw one V8) and there is also a small top rope section which can be used as a bouldering wall to a certain height. While it’s a small gym, there are still plenty of projects to get into regardless of your skill level. Definitely worth a visit.
