This Trad Leading course is designed for climbers eager to explore some of Colorado’s most iconic climbing destinations, including Eldorado Canyon and Unaweep Canyon. Participants will develop essential skills for safe and confident trad climbing, beginning with lead belaying techniques that make you a reliable partner. Instruction covers the placement and use of removable protection such as cams, stoppers, and tricams, helping you protect both yourself and your climbing partner. You’ll also learn how to evaluate the hazards and ratings of different climbs, as well as how to use fixed anchors for descending, build strong anchors when necessary, and navigate walk-offs safely.
In addition to technical skills, this course teaches important outdoor climbing etiquette and ethics for new leaders. By the end of the training, participants should feel confident leading and descending climbs using a variety of removable protection devices. The program provides a solid foundation for venturing into Colorado’s world-class trad climbing areas with competence and awareness, ensuring climbers can approach routes with both safety and efficiency in mind.
