I had an unforgettable experience at the Muir Woods. The place really invokes a sense of serenity that is dolefully necessary after spending so much time behind a computer. The air was absolutely pristine, and the early morning light was just starting to pour in through the redwoods, which, when catching the fog, allowed for some beautiful depictions of "crepuscular rays" that will always stick with me. If able, I recommend the two mile loop which begins on a paved path and turns into a more strenuous hillside trail that provides an elevated view of the forest. The hike can be done in about forty-five minutes to an hour depending on how many time you stop. Don't forget to check out the gift shop and the visitors center for some cool souvenirs!
Giant redwood forest with 900 year old trees. Boardwalk on the main Creek trail is good for wheelchair access till the end too. Total 1.8 mile out and back. Ensure to have a parking reservation ($10) or book shuttle in advance as parking is limited. Parking slots are half hour entry slot. There are water fountains at parking, entrance and even at end of the 0.9 mile end of Creek trail, so lot of options to fill up your bottle on the main trail. Given the tree cover it’s pretty shaded and didn’t get either windy or too hot on the hike.
This is where Cesar, who would go on to become the king of the apes, was released into the wild before plunging the planet into complete chaos resulting in the Planet of the Apes. Staff here is very friendly, and I do have a number of items that you can purchase in a gift shop and they also have a cafe on site, which was inconveniently closed when I decided to visit. It's true that you need to have a reservation to park here, but if you go closer to closing time the parking lot is generally empty and you can park and get admission into the park for free. Now, for those of you who enjoy a little bit of a hassle when seeing nature in all its beauty: good news! The Jehovah's witnesses are here too at the entrance to the park! So, you can strive to be one of the 144,000 elite JW's ruling from heaven with Jesus while exploring this wonderful park. The trees are massive and the trails are relatively well laid out. As long as you stay on the trails you will not get lost. Most of the trails are going to be wheelchair and scooter friendly, so feel free to bring your friends and family that may be physically disabled and in a chair. Temps in here do get quite warm, even in February, so be prepared for that. There are water stations at the entrance as well as along the trail so that you can refill your water bottles as needed. There is no cell phone service at this park, and while there is a Wi-Fi hotspot at the entrance, apart from that there is very little possibility of getting any communication should something go wrong. The park is a short drive from San Francisco and is easily accessible, but be prepared for a winding and turning road to the entrance.
