We love visiting this park. The path through this serene, majestic forest is paved and boardwalked for easy access and saw many strollers and wheelchairs. The path winds back and forth across a babbling brook via wood and stone bridges with plenty of great spots to soak up the natural white noise and misty air. We had no cell service in the park, nor a few miles outside of it, so make sure to download your parking pass with the barcode ahead of time, and map data for navigation if you're not already familiar with the area.

Muir Woods is a must-visit place for anyone who wants to escape the busy city and walk among ancient trees. Many of the coastal redwoods here are between 500 and 800 years old, and some are over 1,000 years old. To put this in perspective: when these trees were just starting to grow, Vikings were leaving Scandinavia in their longboats and settling along the River Liffey, which would eventually become Dublin. Standing among these trees makes you realize how brief our time on Earth is. If you’re looking for an easy, peaceful walk, Muir Woods makes it simple. Stay on the boardwalk trails and enjoy the towering trees, filtered light, and cool air. If you’re in the mood for something more challenging, grab a trail map and try one of the loops marked “moderate.” Over the years, I’ve done most of them, and they’re all rewarding in different ways. My favorite longer hike—when I have the time—is Bootjack to Alpine Trail leading to Pantoll Picnic Area, then returning via Stapleveldt, Ben Johnson, Hillside, and Bohemian Trail. Pantoll is a great place to stop for lunch, with picnic tables and restrooms, and most of the climbing is done by the time you get there. Plan on 3–5 hours total, including a relaxed lunch break. Here are some important notes for visitors today: You need to reserve parking and shuttle services, so make sure to plan ahead. Keep in mind that this area has dense forests, so it gets dark quicker than you might think. Allow enough time to return before it gets dark, and consider bringing a flashlight in your backpack. Muir Woods is best enjoyed at a slow pace, take your time to appreciate the beauty around you. It’s more than just a walk; it’s a chance to connect with nature and reflect on its long history.

A beautiful and very accessible redwood forest, but there are a few important things to know before visiting. First: you must reserve a parking spot in advance. We booked ours the day before, so the best time slots were already taken, but it still worked out fine. The parking area fills up quickly. If you don’t come by car, there is also a shuttle service, though from what I’ve read, you need to reserve those tickets as well (we drove ourselves, so I can’t fully confirm this). The entrance fee is $15 per person, unless you have the America the Beautiful annual pass, which covers the cost. The forest itself is very beautiful. Especially if you’ve been to Sequoia National Park before, it’s interesting to see the coastal redwoods — they’re the “sister species” of the giant sequoias. The atmosphere is magical: very green, naturally dim, with a small stream running through the grove. The main area is relatively small. We did the longest loop trail in the main section (about 1–1.5 hours), and while there are longer trails branching off, a few hours are truly enough to explore the core of the park. We visited in winter, which was still lovely, but I imagine the forest looks even more enchanting in spring or summer when everything is fully green. In winter, some deciduous trees are bare, and the overall color is a bit muted. Unfortunately, we also had cloudy and foggy weather — still atmospheric, but not ideal. Overall, it’s a beautiful park and a great half-day trip from San Francisco. Not too far, not too time-consuming, and definitely worth seeing.

🌲A Highly Recommended Outdoor Gem Muir Woods is an adventurous and scenic outdoor spot in Northern California, perfect for exploring with friends and family. ✨ Highlights • Awesome Hiking: Offers numerous trails suitable for all preferences and difficulty levels. • Diverse Nature: Houses a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including some small waterfalls. • Seasonal Beauty: A visit in early November revealed an amazing variety of mushrooms along the trails. • Amenities: Gift shops and restaurants are available near the trailhead and park office. ⚠️ Essential Tip: Parking MUST Be Booked in Advance! You must book a parking spot ahead of time. It is extremely difficult to find parking without a permit, and you may be turned away. Highly recommend this famous spot for any outdoor enthusiast!
