The city walk through Rovaniemi offers a rich blend of architecture, culture, and local history, highlighted by a visit to the iconic Aalto buildings, the football stadium, and the church of Rovaniemi. Along the way, you will learn fascinating insights, such as the fact that the city map of Rovaniemi was designed by Alvar Aalto in the shape of a reindeer’s head. Aalto, an internationally recognized architect, played a key role in the post-war reconstruction of Rovaniemi. His designs for the theater, town hall, and library form the architectural heart of the city’s renewal.

During the tour, you will explore the unique character of Aalto’s work, including his thoughtful approach to lighting design, interior spaces, and furniture choices. You’ll also have the chance to reflect on whether Finnish landscapes can be recognized in the buildings’ exteriors. When possible, the tour includes a visit to the church of Rovaniemi, where you can admire its distinctive fresco and learn about the stories behind it.

The trail feels very peaceful from the moment you step onto it, surrounded by quiet forest and beautiful views that keep changing as you walk. The scenery is stunning, especially when you reach the viewpoints and the lookout tower and the trail is easy to follow. An overall wonderful experience.

Ounasvaara Winter Trail – A Hidden Gem for Northern Lights! We took the Ounasvaara Winter Trail in the evening and were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights! The trail goes through a peaceful forest and is quite easy to follow. After leaving the car in a nearby parking area, it took us just a short walk to reach the top. At the summit, near the old ski lift (which is no longer in use), we were rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view over Rovaniemi — the perfect spot to watch the aurora dance across the sky. A quiet, natural escape so close to the city, yet it feels completely secluded. Highly recommended if you're in Rovaniemi and hoping for a scenic winter walk with a chance of catching the Northern Lights!

We did this walk in the last week of November and it was around-11C. It had been snowing the night before and the scenery was stunning. We started in the city, walked across the bridge which met up with the trail. It’s easy to find, just follow Google maps. We just walked in our water proof hiking boots and didn’t need any snow boots. Just wear some woollen socks and you should be fine. The walks takes you to the observation tower and then loops into a circuit back down. From the tower, take the right hand path and follow the signs. At the tower there was a fire burning which was great to warn your hands and meet other hikers. It took us about 3.5 hrs walking from the city center and then back again. Highly recommended and you don’t need any special gear. Just layer your clothing and wear good hiking shoes.

Easy and scenic hill for biking and walking up. Great views from the observatory tower. About 15 mins walk from the city.
