We stopped at the information center in town. Bought tickets for the sightseeing cruise which dropped us off on a rock where we started the hike. $50 USD You can either hike all the way up and back down into town ( which we did) or hike up a little ways and back down to grab a boat back into town. Or you can hike from town all the way out and back for free. This hike was a lot more challenging than I thought. But it was so worth it in the end. On our way down you had to navigate these big flat rocks. If they were dry it would not be to difficult. But it started to rain which made them very slippery. The trail was marked by a little red (>). Sometimes hard to spot. It tooks us around 4.5 hours from start to finish.
Great place to hike to or go by the boat during your visit to Geiranger. We went by sup boards and it was magical, although the weather on the fjord could be unpredictable, so it’s probably better to go during a good weather, if you decide to go by yourself on kayak or sup boards. The place is truly unique, the hike from the bay is a bit steep, so be prepared.
Very vertical for the entire trek up with many handrails which make it manageable. Recommend using Fjord Guiding to schedule the boat to the trailhead and back in advance. Double check your timing is right for the return trip to meet the boat at the meeting spot. Also parking in the town is hectic, so plan for extra time if driving.
