This circular trail takes you through a traditional village and its surroundings, offering a glimpse into rural life on an island in the middle of the Atlantic. The journey leads to a remote part of the island, where the first whaling station in the Azores was established. Although whaling is no longer practiced, it remains an important part of local heritage and has deeply shaped the community. The activity was historically carried out manually using simple and rudimentary tools, reflecting the resilience and skill of the people who depended on the sea.

The walk begins at a small fishing harbor near the boathouses, where some of the old boats have been restored and are occasionally used in sailing and rowing events. Along the way, visitors will encounter other reminders of the whaling era, such as a lookout now used for whale watching. The trail winds through natural pools, old paths, homes, gardens, forests, pastures, and traditional wineries. The return journey follows the southern coast, with a stop in a vibrant parish celebrated as the capital of Whale Culture, concluding with a visit to the famous Whalers Museum that preserves the island’s maritime legacy.
