A nice boat ride up the calm Wailua river to the grotto. Solid walking paths around the grotto and surrounding areas. Beautiful music & hula is performed at the grotto and on the return trip. Overall a nice trip and easy to enjoy for anyone!

The Smith’s Fern Grotto Tour is a rather beautiful experience for those in Kauai who aren’t going to be venturing into the river other than by kayak or perhaps a personal boat. Such an enchanting ecosystem that leaves you wanting more! To be able to see the Fern Grotto in all its beauty was great! So lush and lovely. The entire trip is narrated by your boat’s captain with a great history of the island/area, beautiful live music, and dancing. For the price, it is genuinely such a nice grounding moment.

The site is easy to get to, parking and restroom are available. 20 minutes boat time each way plus about 30 minutes visit at the Fern Grotto. Total time is about 70-75 minutes visit. A group of 9 staff are on the boat, including the captain. On the way to Fern Grotto, the captain provides history and information about the site. On the site and on the boat trip back, about 6-7 of the staff sing and provide entertainment. The reason for my 4 star only is that when I asked which side to sit is better when getting on the boat, that staff didn’t like the question and not answered me properly but rather rudely. Otherwise, this is a nice short trip to stop by and try.
