Charleston Land and Sea Tour Combines Fort Sumter Visit with Historic Walking Experience

A new combined sightseeing experience in Charleston is offering visitors the opportunity to explore the city's rich heritage from both the harbor and the historic district. The tour pairs a scenic cruise to Fort Sumter with a guided walking exploration of downtown Charleston, creating a comprehensive introduction to the city's history, architecture, and cultural traditions.

The journey begins aboard a harbor vessel traveling across Charleston Harbor toward historic Fort Sumter, the site where the opening shots of the American Civil War were fired. During the cruise, guests enjoy panoramic waterfront views while learning about Charleston's maritime significance and the events that shaped the nation's history. Upon arrival, National Park Service Rangers provide interpretive programs that bring the fort's historical importance to life.

After exploring Fort Sumter, visitors return to shore and continue their experience with a guided walking tour through Charleston's historic district. The leisurely stroll takes participants along charming streets lined with preserved architecture, hidden gardens, and centuries-old landmarks that reflect the city's enduring character and Southern heritage.

Highlights of the walking tour include iconic locations such as Rainbow Row, elegant antebellum residences, and scenic waterfront areas. Through engaging storytelling and historical interpretation, guides offer visitors a deeper understanding of Charleston's cultural legacy, making the combined land-and-sea experience an enriching and memorable way to discover the Holy City.

I cannot recommend this company. We paid $20 for parking only to be told that due to mechanical issues they would not be sailing today. There was no signage anywhere to indicate that, nothing on their website, nothing on their social media. When we asked what we were supposed to do about the parking we just paid for, the very extremely rude and apathetic employee at the window told us it was basically our problem and that they don't have anything to do with the parking. No, but they could warn people in the parking lot that the boats were not sailing before they paid. To be clear, the only time we were informed that the ferries were not running was when we tried to buy tickets. The employee said it was announced on the website and Facebook, but that is not true. We checked both, before and after. My husband served 20 years in the Navy and was looking forward to the tour, but this left a bad taste in his mouth and he now refuses to give them anymore business. The employee with the really terrible attitude didn't help. I would avoid this one and choose one of the many other wonderful tours in Charleston.

We had a great tour on the boat! Our guide was very knowledgeable, and we learned a few interesting things about the area. The boat portion of the trip was wonderful, and we truly enjoyed the experience out on the water. Unfortunately, once we got close to the fort, the wind was incredibly strong, and for safety reasons, the crew had to cancel the walking portion and head back. While it was a bummer not to walk the fort, we appreciated the crew prioritizing safety. We will absolutely be attempting this again on our next trip! Highly recommended—just keep an eye on the wind forecast!

We took the first ferry tour of the day and got to see them do the flag raising ceremony. It was very moving and patriotic. They asked members of the military to assist. We enjoyed all of the historical information shared on the ferry ride to the fort and also the museum at the fort. I would highly recommend this tour!
