A beginner-friendly Discover SCUBA Diving experience in Hilo is offering first-time divers a safe and accessible way to explore Hawaiʻi’s underwater world without enrolling in a full certification course. The program is designed to build confidence gradually through structured instruction and guided practice.

The experience begins with paperwork, equipment fitting, and a simple orientation before participants move into a 45–60 minute pool training session. This controlled environment allows new divers to learn essential skills such as breathing techniques, equipment handling, and basic underwater movement at a comfortable pace.

Following pool instruction, participants complete a guided ocean dive in the waters off Hilo, Hawaii, USA, where they can experience the island’s vibrant reef systems firsthand. Known for clear conditions, colorful reef fish, and frequent Hawaiian green sea turtle sightings, the area provides an ideal setting for a first dive.

Upon completion, divers receive a Discover SCUBA Diving certificate, allowing supervised diving for up to 14 days and credit toward full PADI Open Water certification. I've only given 3 stars for the simple reason I wasn't impressed in having to haul our hired cylinders off the boat up slippy steep steps into our cars and transport them to the shop and then return and take them down the steps back onto the boat, Phew! Sweat on, knackered before I dive! I could have a bend or slip and break something! I certainly think the boat would benefit from a compressor, it would have helped if they had transported and returned the cylinders in their own vehicle. It would make things so much easier and pleasurable. Rather than making it feel like a working holiday. OK so I'm not a young whipper snapper but I think I'm reasonably fit for a mature person, a few knocks and bangs here and there. To finish off the day we had their accomodation above the shop to scale. More steps, boo boo. Not bad when you get up there, a bit tired but OK, has everything you need. So I've done a bit of moaning, apologies. Diving wise, it was brilliant although the weather was unpredictable and we lost a few days! Time we spent visiting the Island, fab. On the good days we had some really good dives, clear waters, seals nibbling at your fins, so much life, shoals of fish. Plenty of different sites to visit out of Port St Mary so if you can't get on one then there is always another. The boat was a typical dive boat with a lift at the rear, good and solid, well skippered and managed. Overall I enjoyed the experience, if I was to return to the IOM I might think about accomodation on the ground floor and look for a boat with an on board compressor or at least assistance to haul the cylinders around.

They gave me a a dry suit with holes in it. I didn’t realise until I’d left the shop. I ended up having to borrow someone else’s. Not only did they not give a refund, but they blamed it on me and said I’m lucky they’re not making me pay for damages. Next time I went, they again tried to give me a dry suit with holes in it.
