Hike to Las Pailas Trails at Rincon de la Vieja National Park

Embark on an unforgettable hiking adventure through the Las Pailas sector of Rincón de la Vieja National Park, located just a short walk from Hotel Hacienda Guachipelín. Your journey begins with a scenic 45-minute path through dry tropical forest, surrounded by the sounds of wildlife and sweeping views of the volcanic landscape. Upon reaching the park entrance, you’ll step into one of Costa Rica’s most extraordinary geological destinations, where the power of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano takes centre stage.

With a bilingual naturalist guide leading the way, you’ll explore the 3.5 km Las Pailas loop trail, witnessing dramatic volcanic features such as steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, boiling clay pools and sulphur vents scattered across the terrain. Along the route, you’ll also discover the rich biodiversity of the park, home to over 300 bird species and animals like coatis, iguanas, armadillos, and three species of monkeys. After taking in the natural and volcanic wonders, you’ll finish the tour with a peaceful return hike back to the hotel.
