Step into the past as you stroll through Sigtuna, a charming town known as the birthplace of urban Sweden. This guided walk brings to life the origins of the city founded in the late tenth century, revealing its Viking age roots, medieval struggles, royal ambitions, and spiritual milestones. With your expert guide, you explore preserved street networks, ancient plots tied to powerful kings, and the early church ruins that still stand as reminders of Sigtuna’s role in shaping the nation. The stories of coin making under a visionary king, fierce power shifts, and the dramatic end of the monastery era create an engaging journey through centuries of history.
Today, Sigtuna is one of Sweden’s most picturesque towns, filled with wooden houses from later centuries, cozy streets, and an atmosphere that blends modern calm with deep cultural heritage. Beneath the ground lies a remarkably well preserved Viking age settlement, and above it are the landmarks that made Sigtuna the first episcopal seat and home of Sweden’s earliest coin. With a guided walk, you uncover layers of meaning and context far beyond what any digital map or article can offer. From church ruins to medieval tales, from royal influence to trading life, this walk offers a memorable and enriching introduction to Sweden’s oldest city.

It’s free. It smells of old wood (mmmmm!) and has plenty of historical information to read, both in Swedish & English. Expand your mind, smell old stuff.

When we visited the square was in renovation so I didn’t even noticed it😂 Of course I missed the entrance. I have a photo from the back, taken when I was wondering the streets😂

Interesting C18th wooden Town Hall with excellent history posted outside. (There’s a lot more than in my pictures) Closed on Mondays.

Acclaimed as the birthplace of Sweden, Sigtuna is a quaint town north of Sweden, around 30 minutes from University Town Uppsala and 15 mins from Arlanda airport. Embellished with nordic town landscape, it offers a wide gamut of places to visit such as Sigtuna Radhus, ST Olaf’s church ruins, Sigtuna Museum etc. Apart from visiting these places, Sigtuna has the vibes of a picture postcard Sweden, enthralling to just sit, sip a cup of coffee and get soaked in the unique Swedish culture, those mesmerising cobbled lanes and ducks paddling in the crystal clear river water.
