This experience is far from an ordinary history walk. It brings you into the lively heart of one of Sydneys most character filled neighbourhoods, where tales of convicts, dreamers, rebels, and local legends spill from every corner. As you wander between charming laneways and grand old buildings, you step into stories shaped by grit, humour, and the unmistakable spirit of early Australia. Each stop reveals a mix of true tales and local colour that breathe life into the citys most unforgettable characters.
Along the way you pause at a selection of historic pubs that have stood witness to centuries of change. Here you can unwind as your guide brings the past to life in a warm and relaxed setting. This is learning woven with laughter, heritage delivered with heart, and history enjoyed the most Australian way possible. Rich storytelling, beautiful architecture, and the easy comfort of a classic local pub come together to create an experience that feels both timeless and proudly down to earth.

BETTER, BETTER, BETTER… It Just Keeps Getting Better! Fortune of War ! Sydney’s Oldest Hotel Returning to the Fortune of War after a few months felt like catching up with an old friend who never fails to impress. This iconic Rocks institution continues to set the standard for classic Aussie hospitality. From the moment we walked in, the service was spot-on. Bartender Aurelio poured with charm and precision, while Darci and the waitstaff kept everything running smoothly with genuine warmth. The food? Honest, hearty, and exactly what a top pub should deliver. Our table of four enjoyed: • Fish & Chips ×2 crisp, golden, and generous. • Prawn Linguine rich, fresh, and perfectly cooked. • Burrito Bowl colourful, filling, and full of flavour. All matched beautifully with quality wines and a proper Guinness. I’ve been having a beer here since 1971, and the transformation over the decades has been remarkable — now truly complete. It’s a venue that honours its history while serving up a modern, welcoming experience. Whether you’re meeting friends, gathering family, or introducing visitors to a slice of Sydney’s soul, the Fortune of War delivers every time. With its prime location at The Rocks, easy access via Circular Quay rail, light rail, and nearby parking, getting there is a breeze. One of Australia’s true gems. The Fortune of War awaits ! and it just keeps getting better and you can dine inside or out!

A top pub to have a drink and a chat. Wonderful atmosphere and decor at Sydney’s oldest pub. Sitting outside in the shade with a cold ale was a treat in the warm Sydney weather. The bar staff and table staff were friendly and efficient. A very popular pub.

What a great place to eat at. There were several areas to seat depending on what vibe you wanted while eating. The guy at the front door was excellent, very welcoming and knew his stuff. The service, food and drinks were great too.

Great experience at the Fortune of War. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lively. There was a very good singer inside, and everyone was dancing, but we were sitting outside. The best part was that the music was still enjoyable and we could easily talk and hear each other. The bouncer also had infectious energy and made us laugh a lot! The beer was great. Highly recommend for a local experience.

We have been frequenting this fabulous pub for over 20 years . I'm very impressed with the care and detail that was taken in the latest renovation. A few teething problems with the kitchen when they re-opened , but they seem to have rectified that now. We had a lovely afternoon there on Saturday, food was great and the staff are always friendly & helpful. Definitely worth checking out. One of our favourite pubs. 🥂
