Located on the northern coast of Madeira, this levada trail offers a captivating journey through both forested landscapes and scenic farmlands. The walk follows the Levada do Rei, starting in São Jorge and ending at the source of the levada in the spectacular Ribeiro Bonito stream. The first part of the trail passes through a forested area where indigenous vegetation thrives, alongside panoramic views of the São Jorge and Santana farmlands. As the path continues along the mountain slopes, it enters a rich area of native forest, showcasing the impressive biodiversity of Madeira.

The trail concludes at Ribeiro Bonito, a serene sanctuary of nature where the abundant clear water sustains a vibrant ecosystem. This area is part of the Laurisilva forest, recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 1999, where Madeira’s endemic vegetation flourishes at its best. Along the way, hikers encounter majestic centenary Madeira laurels , laurel trees , and Madeira mahogany , as well as small endemic birds like the firecrest and chaffinch whose songs bring life to the forest. The combination of lush vegetation, rich wildlife, and cultural history creates a feeling of stepping back in time to Madeira’s discovery.
