This serene half day walk follows Levada Nova in the parish of Tabúa and continues westward toward Ponta do Sol. The trail is easy and flat, making it accessible for most walkers, though it is not recommended for anyone with vertigo, as some stretches run along high cliff edges without protective barriers. Throughout the route you can enjoy sweeping views over the Tabúa valley, Ribeira Brava and the coastline of Ponta do Sol. The path offers a peaceful immersion in Madeira’s rural landscapes and the timeless rhythm of levada life.
Levada Nova is relatively young compared to the island’s older water channels, as water only began running through it in 1962. As you walk, you will see agricultural terraces cultivated with great care by local farmers. Sugar cane fields are one of the highlights of this trail. The tradition of cultivating sugar cane on Madeira dates back to the fifteenth century and continues today for the production of cachaça, used in the island’s iconic Poncha, as well as the rich cane honey essential in traditional cakes and pastries. With its location on the sunnier south coast, this walk is pleasant and suitable throughout the year.
