Levada do Norte

This pleasant walk begins along the Levada do Norte soon after Cabo Girão in the area of Câmara de Lobos. The route continues through the quiet valley of Quinta Grande and later Campanário in the municipality of Ribeira Brava. Known as one of the oldest levadas on Madeira Island, this historic water channel extends for many kilometers and took many years to build. On this tour you follow a comfortable and flat six kilometer section that showcases the traditional purpose of the levada system, carrying water from the north of the island to irrigate farmlands in the south.

As you move along the path you pass through the characteristic terraced fields known as Poios, beautifully arranged and still maintained for agriculture. Alongside vegetable plots and fruit trees, the landscape also includes stands of eucalyptus and mimosa that add variety to the scenery. Throughout the walk there are constant views over the surrounding villages, their charming houses and the deep Ribeira Brava valley, with the Atlantic Ocean creating a striking backdrop.
