This immersive journey through the northern and northeastern coast of Madeira reveals some of the island’s most remote and authentic landscapes. The tour begins in the peaceful village of Ponta Delgada, framed beautifully between ocean and mountains. Its natural seawater pools and charming seaside church set a serene tone as you explore the northern coastline. Continuing toward São Jorge, one of the oldest parishes in the region, you are welcomed by lush scenery and fantastic views from the Cabana viewpoint. Here the panorama opens over Arco de São Jorge and the vast Atlantic, and on clear days the distant island of Porto Santo can also be seen. A lunch stop in this quiet village allows you to enjoy local flavors and take in the charm of the area.
The route then leads to Porto da Cruz, where mountains rise like a natural amphitheater around the village. The impressive Penha d’Águia dominates the landscape while the historic Northern Milling Company offers a fascinating look into Madeira’s sugar cane tradition. You can explore its steam powered distillery, observe original machinery and sample rum varieties at the Rum House. The adventure continues to Pico do Facho, a viewpoint with sweeping views over Machico valley and Ponta de São Lourenço. The journey concludes in the coastal town of Santa Cruz, one of Madeira’s oldest cities, where you can stroll along the seafront, explore local shops or visit the architecturally significant church of San Salvador.
