Byron Bay Gateway Airport is a small, regional airport that offers a relaxed alternative to the larger and busier airports nearby. Its biggest advantage is convenience – located close to Byron Bay, it makes getting into town quick and easy, whether by car hire, shuttle, or taxi. For many travelers, this airport takes the stress out of flying. Check-ins are usually fast, security is straightforward, and the overall atmosphere is far more laid-back than city airports. Staff are generally friendly and helpful, which adds to the positive experience. Another highlight is the scenic arrival and departure. On a clear day, the views of Byron’s coastline and hinterland are stunning, giving travelers a real sense of arrival before they even hit the ground. The facilities, while basic, are clean and well maintained. A small café provides coffee and snacks, and car rental services are available on site. That said, there are some drawbacks. As a smaller regional airport, flight options are more limited compared to Gold Coast or Brisbane. Delays can also feel more inconvenient here, as there are fewer amenities to pass the time. Seating areas are adequate but not spacious, and food choices are limited to simple snacks rather than full meals. Travelers who are used to big airports with lounges and shops may find it lacking. Overall, Byron Bay Gateway Airport is a solid choice if you value convenience and a stress-free start or finish to your trip. It won’t suit those expecting wide international connections or luxury facilities, but for what it is – a simple, friendly, and efficient regional airport – it does the job well

A poorly run airport with security staff that think they are tactical operatives. They are highly Inappropriate, especially to elderly people, actually, the more I watched them the more I realised they were inappropriate with anyone. Power trippers deluxe. They have a huge area before you go into security but once you get past them after they pat you down and almost make you strip off, you will end up in a small seating area where most people will have to stand. What a terrible experience, just go a little further to the Gold Coast, it’s worth it.

This has got to be the worst airport on the planet. Whoever designed the refurbishment should be sacked. There is this huge space to check in, once that has been done you are herded through a single security check in lane into a small room ( good luck finding a place to sit). Planes all arrive at the same time so the wait times are massive and the security staff are less than friendly. I would pull the entire thing down and start again.

Great little airport, in late March anyway. You don't have to arrive 2 hours early as flight times are spread out and check in is quick BUT don't miss the luggage drop off cut off time ! Friendly staff. Uber available about $70 into or back from Byron. Public bus 100 metres walk but doesn't run that often or in the evening. Best thing is you can check your luggage and wander over to Seven Mile Brewery next door for a bevvy or two and footlong bratty (vegan options available ha ha).

Small regional airport for Byron Bay and Ballina ✈️ The airport has a couple of options to grab a meal and drinks as well as a Relay store with all the usual items - books, water, drinks, snacks. Seating available but it get busy. Security doesn’t take too long. Ubers can take a while so good idea to book ahead 🚖
