According to Hellenic myth, the city of Corinth was founded by Corinthos, a descendant of the Sun god Helios. Alternatively, some myths suggest it was founded by the goddess Ephyra, the daughter of the Titan Oceanus, which is why the city was also known as Ephyra in ancient times. Ancient Corinth, the original City of Corinth, was established in the 10th century BCE and quickly grew into one of the largest and most prosperous cities in ancient Greece. It was renowned for being the wealthiest port in the region, strategically located between the Aegean and Ionian Seas, making it a vital trade hub.

In 44 BCE, Corinth was re-founded by Julius Caesar as a Roman colony, solidifying its importance within the Roman Empire. Its transformation into a Roman city brought further prosperity and expansion. Centuries later, Corinth became a key site for early Christianity. The Apostle Paul visited Corinth, where he worked and established a flourishing Christian church. Paul’s time in Corinth led to the writing of two letters, now part of the New Testament, known as 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians, which continue to shape Christian teachings today. The city's rich history, from its mythological origins to its pivotal role in early Christianity, makes it an iconic site in both ancient and religious history.
