RYA SRC Marine Radio Course Offers Online Training and VHF Certification Pathway


A structured maritime communication training program prepares candidates for the RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC), a qualification recognized internationally for operating VHF marine radio systems under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).


The course includes approximately 10 hours of online learning, supported by official materials such as the RYA SRC eBook handbook. Participants study essential topics including routine VHF communication procedures, channel usage, Digital Selective Calling (DSC), and emergency distress protocols, building a strong theoretical foundation before practical assessment.


After completing the online component and internal assessment, candidates become eligible to sit the official RYA/MCA Certificate of Competence exam. This examination includes both practical and written elements and must be booked separately through the Royal Yachting Association. A minimum age of 16 is required, and the certification is open to applicants of all nationalities.


The qualification authorizes holders to operate marine VHF radiotelephones on vessels fitted with GMDSS equipment, typically under 300 gross registered tons. The syllabus also covers the use of safety systems such as EPIRBs and SARTs, ensuring candidates are prepared for both routine and emergency maritime communications. Compatible across PC, Mac, and tablets, the course is designed for flexible online access with basic audio and internet requirements.
