This RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) course offers a comprehensive 10-hour online learning experience, including the official RYA SRC course and the RYA VHF Handbook (eBook). Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to take the UK RYA/MCA Certificate of Competence in Radiotelephony GMDSS SRC exam at the Boat School. The course includes an online assessment and certificate, which must be completed and passed before booking the face-to-face practical and written SRC exam. Please note that the exam fee is not included in the course price and must be booked and paid directly through the RYA. For current fees, you can view SRC exam fees here and book your exam via the RYA website, creating a free RYA account if you don’t already have one.
Eligibility for this course and exam is open to candidates of any nationality or residency, provided they are at least 16 years old on the day of the exam. The SRC certificate authorises the holder to operate a VHF radiotelephone on the Maritime Mobile band, including channel 70 for Digital Selective Calling, typically on vessels under 300 gross registered tons with voluntarily fitted GMDSS equipment. The syllabus covers routine marine VHF operations, correct channels, distress and emergency procedures, ship-to-shore communications, practical use of DSC-equipped radios, GMDSS, EPIRB, and SARTs. The course is compatible with PC, Mac, and tablets with broadband or 3G internet, JavaScript enabled, microphone and speakers/headphones, and pop-ups allowed. Supported devices include Windows 10+ PCs, macOS 10.13+ Macs, iPads with iOS 11+, and Android tablets with version 4.1+, using the latest browsers.
