The Madrid Río project represents one of the most transformative urban developments in the modern history of Madrid, reshaping the city’s relationship with its riverbanks. Beginning in 2003, the ambitious initiative started with burying the M30 ring road, freeing vast expanses of land for public space and reconnecting neighborhoods once divided by heavy traffic. Designed by West 8 in collaboration with the M-RIO architects led by Gines Garrido Colomero, the master plan reimagined the Manzanares River as a vibrant green corridor. New landscapes such as Salón de Pinos, Avenida de Portugal, Huerta de la Partida, and various historic garden areas were revitalized to create a unified linear park. Completed between 2007 and 2011, the project introduced a sustainable model of urban renewal grounded in accessibility, ecology, and community life.
