During your tour of three historic houses that trace Houston’s journey from plantation to emancipation, talented actress Kijana Wiseman brings history to life through dramatic reenactments and song. The performances highlight the hardships of slavery and the triumph of freedom, drawing from a Library of Congress slave narrative and a script written by Martha Whiting-Goddard, great-granddaughter of Reverend Jack Yates. The tour features the 1847 Kellum-Noble House, the 1866 Fourth Ward Cottage, and the 1870 Yates House—each designated by UNESCO as Sites of Memory for their role in the “Slave Route Project.”
From Plantation to Emancipation – The Freedom Experience begins on Saturday, February 10, in celebration of Black History Month, and continues on the second and fourth Saturdays each month from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Groups of 10 or more are encouraged to reserve at least two weeks in advance by calling 713-655-1912 (ask for Nicole) or emailing grouptours@heritagesociety.org. These 90-minute tours are offered year-round as part of the Visit Houston Signature Experience for the Soul series, providing an educational and emotionally resonant journey through Houston’s history.
