Trunk shows are an engaging outreach program designed to bring the rich history of The Heritage Society directly to schools, museums, and other education-focused organizations. During a 45–60-minute session, a knowledgeable docent dresses as a nineteenth-century frontiersman who has just moved to Texas. This immersive experience allows students to step back in time and gain a first-hand perspective on what life might have been like for early settlers. The docent brings a carefully curated trunk filled with objects that illustrate the daily necessities, survival tools, and technologies of the era, offering students a tangible connection to history.
This program is especially well-suited for elementary-aged children, as it provides an interactive environment where they can touch the artifacts and actively participate in learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore the items in the trunk, and engage with the stories behind them, making history feel immediate and relatable. By combining storytelling with hands-on exploration, trunk shows make historical concepts more accessible and memorable, fostering curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the lives of those who shaped Texas in the nineteenth century.
