Discover the fascinating history of the Sea Sami culture and the maritime heritage of Arctic seamanship at the world’s northernmost coastal museum, located on the historic Full Steam pier in the heart of Tromsø. The museum’s Sea Sami exhibition on the third floor invites you into the unique world of the Sea Sami people, showcasing their deep connection to the ocean and the Arctic environment through engaging exhibits, artifacts, and immersive storytelling. Alongside this cultural journey, visitors can explore the Northern Lights exhibition, featuring breathtaking photographs of the Aurora Borealis captured by renowned artists such as Ole Salomonsen, Truls Iversen, and Per Ivar Somby. These stunning images capture the ethereal beauty of the Arctic sky, offering a mesmerizing complement to the stories of the Sea Sami’s enduring bond with nature and the sea.

Continue your journey to the Seamen’s Exhibition on the fourth floor, where the rich maritime history of the Arctic comes to life. Here, you can explore historic vessels, maritime artifacts, and exhibits that tell the tales of sailors and fishermen who braved the northern waters. The museum’s central location in Tromsø offers a perfect backdrop—surrounded by dramatic Arctic landscapes and wildlife that continue to sustain local communities today. After immersing yourself in centuries of history and culture, you can unwind at Full Steam Tromsø’s cozy seafood restaurant, where dishes inspired by Northern Norwegian traditions await. Waste of time and money. If you're going to a museum in a different land (or indeed any land!), some sort of information is needed to explain what you're looking at. That doesn't happen here. You get three floors of various pieces of Arctic circle "history" with no description of what it is or how it fits in. The crowning glory was a typewriter sitting there by itself. Again, why? There was a decent bit on Norway in the Second World War, but the other exhibits (history of stockfish, the Sami, the Northern Lights), well, you make up your own stories. In reality, it's a pub/restaurant with interesting curios. Perhaps concentrate on the food/drinks, and leave the museums to people who care about such things.

Interesting exhibits on 3 floors. Unfortunately, all labels are in Norwegian, no English. On the top floor, lovers of seafaring will get their money's worth. Everything is nicely arranged and it's a very cozy restaurant. I'd recommend a visit!

This is a real gem. Not so easy to find the entrance, so ask at the restaurant facing the harbor. The museum is a labor of love; a private collection of items from the indigenous Sami people, and a ton of photos, equipment and momentos contributed by local sailors. The whole place has a funkiness that makes it stand out from the perfect formality and design of so many Nordic museums. We're very glad we chose it for our afternoon activity.

I had a great time when I visited. The items on display show a broad view of Tromsø's history and culture. I particularly liked the sapmi people's display. As well as the large collection of maritime memorabilia. I found the self-entry ticket to be straightforward.

The seafarers museum is made by Tromsø retired sailors who have brought all their heirlooms there and are improving and fixing the exhibition that has been damaged by a flood. If you get a chance to talk to them it's really worth it!

There’s a decent variety of items here but the lack of any descriptions as to what you’re looking at makes it not much more than an organized antique store really. If they add descriptions of things even in Norsk then you could translate. I want to say there was some QR codes that had some information but they didn’t work :/ At least wasn’t that expensive , but if you’re looking for some idea as to what you’re looking at I’d go to another place personally.
