Karura Forest is home to around 200 bird species, along with wildlife such as suni, Harvey's duiker, bushbucks, bush pigs, genets, civets, honey badgers, bush babies, porcupines, Syke's monkeys, bush squirrels, hares, fruit bats, and various reptiles and butterflies.

In addition to its natural beauty, visitors to Karura Forest can explore the Mau Mau caves, scenic waterfalls, rivers, picnic spots, marked walking trails, and bird-rich wetlands. The forest also features the historic incinerator once used by the Central Bank of Kenya to burn old currency notes, and the site where the late Professor Wangari Maathai led a campaign against the illegal acquisition of forest land.

Always a great place to visit when in Nairobi. Pick a weekday and you will almost have the forest to yourself. The various tracks are well marked - take a photo of the forest map for reference. Some of the native trees are labelled with the species information. Quite a few stands of Australian eucalyptus trees as well (ironbarks, spotted gums). Waterfall and the track that follows the river down towards Gate C is a highlight. Also keep an eye out for the colony of colobus monkeys down near post 23 (near Gate C). There are Sykes’ monkeys also there - see the thermal imaging. You can do a good 9km loop from Gate A.

Beautiful nature reserve located in the North end of the city, this is a must visit if you're in Nairobi. Tourists and residents alike frequent this place for a nice morning walk / run, or a visit to the café (great place for some peaceful work-time surrounded by nature), or just a picnic with your friends. There are many trails within the park, with the locations very well marked out to help you navigate - a very nice touch for new visitors and veterans alike. Highly recommended if you're looking for a nice forest that's accessible and hike friendly.

Karura Forest is such a beautiful escape from the city perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to be surrounded by nature. The trails are well-maintained and great for walking, jogging, or biking. There’s a lovely lily lake, a serene picnic area for relaxing, and even a fun kids' playground that makes it ideal for families. You’ll definitely spot wildlife while you’re there like dik-diks, Egyptian ducks, and plenty of cheeky monkeys. Just a heads-up: the monkeys can be quite the troublemakers! They’re not shy about snatching food, tins, and even opening bags, so it’s best to keep your snacks secure and stay alert around them. Overall, Karura is an amazing green space with a peaceful vibe and lots of areas to explore or just chill. Great spot for nature lovers, fitness enthusiasts, and families alike.
