Our tour begins at the Hector Pietersen Memorial, where you’ll learn about the significance of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, a pivotal moment in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. From there, we’ll walk down Moema Street, retracing the steps of the historic march, and continue along Vilakazi Street to visit Nelson Mandela’s house, where he lived until his 27 years of imprisonment. You’ll have approximately 20 minutes to explore inside the house (entrance fee not included) and gain a deeper understanding of Mandela’s early life and legacy. The tour then continues to Desmond Tutu’s house, another landmark of Soweto’s rich history, before stopping for a delicious lunch at a local eatery.

After lunch, we’ll take a minibus taxi to Orlando East, giving you a taste of the local mode of transport, and continue to the famous Soweto Towers. Our final stop is at Nomzamo Park, an informal settlement, where you’ll gain insight into the daily lives and resilience of many Soweto residents. This immersive tour offers a comprehensive view of Soweto’s history, culture, and contemporary life, blending significant historical sites with authentic local experiences for a meaningful journey through one of South Africa’s most iconic townships.

Lebo knew everyone and every corner of Soweto, took me to places I definitely wouldn’t have found on my own. He was flexible with time and the route and even came to pick up me at the hostel so we could go by public transportation. Really friendly and attentive. It was an amazing experience, I truly recomend it for those who wants to get to know more than Mandela house.

Recommended tour. Lebo is a highly knowledgeable guide who will explain and help you fully experience the past and recent history of Soweto. In addition to his knowledge and explanations, he is available to answer questions and queries. Tours can be found at much higher prices, with much lower quality.

We had an absolutely unforgettable day with Lebo in Soweto. We visited several historically important places and were able to immerse ourselves in the history of South Africa & Soweto. Lebo has a wealth of knowledge, which he imparts in a great way. He knows Soweto really well, and we couldn't have asked for a better guide! Half the day flew by, we laughed a lot and had a lot of fun. The Soweto on Foot Tour is highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience Soweto up close. Many thanks also to Murendeni, who picked us up from the hotel and entertained us wonderfully on the drive to Soweto, also sharing a wealth of knowledge with us. Both Murendeni and Lebo are incredibly empathetic, they adapted the tour to our needs and responded to any questions or requests. We can only say a heartfelt thank you for these unforgettable memories! 🫶🏼
