Discover the hidden naval world of Djurgarden as you journey through gripping tales of maritime warfare, secret operations, and historic craftsmanship. This guided experience brings the past to life as you walk through the former naval base of Galarvarvet, once a highly protected military area in the heart of Stockholm. Your expert guide shares vivid stories ranging from eighteenth century naval battles to silent operations carried out during the world war era. You explore the grounds where workshops once buzzed with activity, where minesweeping strategies were shaped, and where warships and bombers once rested along the shoreline. The visit also includes a guided experience inside the Museum of Wrecks, the newest museum in the city, where preserved maritime remains offer a unique window into the underwater history of Sweden.
As you continue your walk, you step into the location where the first Swedish submarine was constructed and wander through buildings that once played vital roles in the nations defense. The tour reveals how Galarvarvet evolved over centuries, showcasing structures dating back to the seventeenth century and stories that shaped both the city and its naval legacy. This enriching experience blends dramatic history, striking scenery, and fascinating maritime heritage, offering the perfect opportunity to uncover a side of Stockholm rarely seen by visitors. The tour begins by the Wasahamnen sign, located opposite the main entrance of the Museum of Wrecks, ensuring a smooth and memorable start to your journey.

Right next to the visitor center (enter, turn right) there's a cafe called Restaurang Bakery. 80 kr (€8) for a fika (espresso + cinnamon bun) right by the water. No reservations needed. To escape the cold and enjoy the best views, be sure to come here! Head downstairs for free bathroom.

Lovely, extremely helpful staff. We hired bikes to go round the island, the island is well worth exploring, bikes make it much easier than on foot, and having the bicycle hire place at the visitor centre is very convenient. When we visited the bikes available were all the same size and there is a limit as to how much you can adjust a bicycle to fit. The bikes were good, but if you are taller or shorter than the average Swede, you might be better hiring elsewhere.

We rented our bikes for a tour of Djurgården today. The LADY at the cashier today was excellent: very kind, service minded, nice lady … and she managed to find 5 bikes for us! The bike tour was very nice. Thank you!
