Embark on a meaningful walking tour through Lisbon as you uncover the compelling story of the Jewish community in Portugal. This journey takes you to significant historical and cultural sites that trace the presence of Jewish life in the capital—from its emergence in the 12th century as a legally recognized community to the periods of expulsion, return, and revival. You’ll explore how this community once thrived with its own jurisdiction and identity, yet often found itself both deeply rooted and perpetually displaced. Visit poignant landmarks such as the Shaare Tikva Synagogue, the first to be built in Portugal since the 15th century, and hear stories of resilience and renewal.

Throughout the tour, walk through historic Jewish quarters and important memorials, including those honoring figures like Abraham Anahory and Aristides Sousa Mendes—the heroic Portuguese consul who saved thousands of Jewish refugees during World War II. Journey into Lisbon’s medieval Alfama district, where the past still whispers through its narrow streets, revealing the hidden layers of Sephardic heritage. Gain insight into the different Jewish communities that shaped Portugal's history and see how Lisbon today stands as a modern city of tolerance, diversity, and cultural richness. This immersive experience invites you to connect deeply with centuries of Jewish legacy woven into the very fabric of Lisbon.

Deeply Disrespectful and Disheartening Experience As observant Jews from Toronto who love visiting synagogues around the world to connect with our faith and history, our experience at this synagogue in Lisbon was nothing short of disgraceful. We had been in contact with Sandra Montez and had a confirmed date and time for our visit. We chose not to send our passport information over email for security reasons, which we made clear and were told to bring them in person, which we did. Despite following those instructions, we were abruptly turned away at the door with no consideration, no respect, and no basic decency. Yes, we understand the need for strict security. But we complied. We came prepared. What we did not expect was to be treated with such arrogance and disregard. This is not just poor management, it reflects a deeper issue of how our own are turning people away from the faith with coldness, rigidity, and disrespect. This is exactly why so many young Jews feel alienated. If you’re looking to feel connected to your roots, I urge you to support your local synagogue instead, a place where you’re welcomed, not shamed at the door. This experience left a sour taste, and it’s a shame to see such a historic place lose its heart.

Beautiful Synagogue in heart of Lisbon. Took a guided tour with a very knowledgeable guide. Whether you are Jewish or not, this is an amazing part of Portuguese history. Because of security reasons, you have to make advance reservations and provide passport information.
