On this enriching day trip from Lisbon, we journey to the Castle of Montemor-o-Novo, a striking medieval fortress that stands proudly over the Alentejo landscape. As we explore its ancient structure, we uncover its historical relevance and admire sweeping views of the surrounding hills and fields, transporting us back to the time of knights and early settlers. Our next stop is the peaceful Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Visitation, perched on a hilltop and cherished by locals for its serene ambiance and traditional Alentejo décor, including stunning tile work that reflects the region’s deep-rooted spirituality. The experience continues with a guided visit to the Plansel winery, where we gain fascinating insight into the techniques of Alentejo winemaking, the aging process, and the vital role of the region's terroir—though wine tasting is not included, the visit highlights the importance of viticulture to local identity. For lunch, we head to the A Ribeira restaurant, renowned for its charming tradition of “singing the menu,” where staff melodically present a selection of hearty Alentejo dishes like migas à alentejana and roast lamb, offering a lively and memorable dining experience that celebrates regional culture and cuisine.

During our trip to Portugal, we use Get Your Guide app to get our organized private tours. For the town of Évora, our guide was Elsa from Évora Cultural Experience. She was super informative sharing the history about this quaint city. There was plenty of walking but nothing strenuous but we covered all of the old town sites. Would totally recommend this tour and Elsa!

Our tour guide Paolo was the BEST! He was a human history book with such a love and passion for Portugal! Thank you Paolo for our informative and memorable walking tour of Evora--a highlight of our trip to Portugal!

After seeing the other layers of history in Evora all that was missing was the earliest. Joao provided us with an interesting tour with the monuments at the end of the day, and helped answer the question 'why here'. He was knowledgeable and accomodating, thanks Joao!

João Matos provided myself and my husband an amazing tour of historic Évora . It has been the Highlight of our trip. His knowledge and ease was much appreciated. We were expecting it to be a small group tour and it turned out to be just the two of us. Two and a half hours of amazing history and his level of knowledge and enthusiasm made it an incredible experience. We will not forget it ! He even recommended a gelato location that was so great that we had it twice. Glad to have met him and to have had this wonderful experience. What a gem.

Our guide Paolo (I think that’s how to spell)- was incredible ! Was one of the best day tours I’ve ever taken. His knowledge of Jewish life in Evora was tremendous . Would 10/10 recommend again!
