Levada do Norte Walk Showcases Madeira’s Historic Irrigation Trails and Valley Views

This scenic walk follows a gentle section of the Levada do Norte, beginning near Cabo Girão in the Câmara de Lobos area and continuing through the quiet valleys of Quinta Grande and Campanário in Ribeira Brava. As one of Madeira’s oldest levadas, this historic water channel stretches across much of the island and was built over many years to transport water from the north to the agricultural lands in the south.

The chosen six-kilometer stretch offers a comfortable, mostly flat route that highlights both the engineering purpose and natural beauty of the levada system. Along the way, walkers gain a clear understanding of how these irrigation channels have supported farming communities for generations.

The path passes through traditional terraced fields known as *poios*, where local agriculture continues to thrive. Vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and patches of eucalyptus and mimosa create a varied and colorful landscape that reflects Madeira’s rural character.

Throughout the walk, there are continuous views over the Ribeira Brava valley, nearby villages, and scattered hillside homes. The dramatic scenery is enhanced by distant views of the Atlantic Ocean, providing a striking contrast between lush greenery and open sea. This peaceful route offers a rewarding combination of cultural heritage, agricultural landscapes, and panoramic island scenery.
