The Go Southwest tour of Madeira offers an immersive journey through the island’s sunniest and least touristy areas, revealing hidden gems along the southwest coast. The tour begins in Ponta do Sol, known as “sunny point,” where visitors can admire the pebble beach, stroll along the shore, and explore the 15th-century Baroque church at the village center. From here, the journey continues to Madalena do Mar, surrounded by rocky slopes, cliffs, and coastal scenery, and home to Madeira’s largest banana plantation. The tour then heads to Calheta, Madeira’s largest municipality, where highlights include the Old Sugar Mill museum showcasing sugarcane production, the local church, a marina, a promenade, and an artificial golden sand beach, perfect for a leisurely walk.

Next, the tour visits the peaceful village of Prazeres, where an educational farm introduces visitors to rural life and offers natural teas and cider. At Ponta do Pargo, the southwestern tip of the island, guests enjoy a 90-minute break for lunch and can admire the historic lighthouse perched 290 meters above sea level. The tour continues to Paúl do Mar, a small fishing village renowned for surfing, and ends in Jardim do Mar, a remote village surrounded by wildflowers and steep cliffs. Here, visitors can walk along a serene promenade and explore narrow streets that preserve the village’s historic charm, completing a full day of culture, nature, and picturesque scenery.

Wolfhound provided the perfect way to experience Southwest Ireland. Dave was an outstanding guide, sharing his deep knowledge of Irish history through captivating storytelling, humour, and music. His passion for Irish wildlife was evident—and truly contagious. Dave showed incredible patience and care throughout the trip, thoughtfully tailoring experiences for each of the 13 people in our group based on our interests and abilities. My personal highlight was our two water adventures, where we were lucky enough to see countless dolphins—an unforgettable experience! The accommodations were top-notch and the food was exceptional throughout the trip. I’m already looking forward to booking another tour to explore Northern Ireland. I can’t recommend Wolfhound highly enough. Thank you, Dave!

I typically don’t do surveys or reviews for products and services however, I wanted to make an exception and comment on a recent trip through Wolfhound Adventure Tours (6 Day West) that I took with my wife, daughter, son-in-law, and 4 great friends (as well as 7 new friends I met on the tour). I expect a tour guide to be knowledgeable, but Dave O’Connor took it to another level. Whether it be delivering a poem, or singing a soulful Irish song, Dave impressed us all with his expertise in Irish culture, folklore, history and wildlife while demonstrating a great sense of humor. He had us laughing throughout the entire trip. It’s obvious Dave puts his heart and soul into his work and is deeply devoted and passionate about Ireland, its history, wildlife, and its people. This isn’t a typical tour. It was a wonderful whirlwind of learning, hiking, pub hopping and sightseeing which allowed us to become immersed in the Irish culture. Dave surprised us by taking us to several off the beaten path hidden gems which enhanced our experience even more. Dave took time to get to know each person in the group. He Introduced us to many Irish songs and artists including Christy Moore which I now have on my playlist. Dave has a gift of playing just the right song during each part of the tour which helps you to connect to his stories. Some of my favorite stops were Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, the Burren, Conamara, and the town of Westport. If you really want to experience what Ireland is all about then I highly recommend this tour. You won’t be disappointed. Chieftain Mike

Our family had the great pleasure of spending 6 days on the southwest Ireland tour with Dave, and I can honestly say he made the trip absolutely unforgettable. From the very beginning, it was clear that Dave is not just a guide, but a passionate adventurer with a wealth of knowledge about Ireland. He seamlessly wove together history, culture, agriculture, and even wildlife in a way that was both fascinating and fun. What really stood out was how he took us to places well off the beaten path — hidden gems, breathtaking views, and local treasures we never would have discovered on our own. Those experiences made the trip feel so much more personal and authentic. Beyond his knowledge, Dave was an absolute joy to be around. He was kind, thoughtful, and always made sure we were comfortable and on time without ever making us feel rushed. We had a group of 11 of all ages and he made accommodations so everyone’s needs were met. My 17 month old son adores Dave! He has a fantastic sense of humor, kept the atmosphere light and enjoyable, and even curated a perfect playlist that became the soundtrack of our trip. Our family felt so lucky to have had Dave as our guide — he truly elevated our Ireland adventure and turned it into a memory we’ll cherish forever. If you’re traveling to Ireland, I cannot recommend him highly enough! He is worth every single penny and then some!! You’re guaranteed to have some mighty craic!

Dave from Wolfhound turned our Ireland trip into magic — 100% recommended! Our recent trip to Ireland with my family of eleven — including two seniors with limited mobility and four kids aged 1½, 5, 11, and 13 — was nothing short of magical, and it was all thanks to Dave from Wolfhound. From the moment we met him, Dave was endlessly patient, kind, and genuinely invested in making sure every single person in our group had the trip of their dreams. Our interests were wildly different — from deep Catholic heritage to stone circles and pagan traditions, from fairies and folklore to exact dates and historical details. Dave asked us right at the start who we were and what we loved — and then somehow wove it all together into a seamless, joy-filled adventure where everyone felt seen and satisfied. Highlights of our time with Dave: • 🌿 Personalized Itinerary: From famous landmarks to hidden treasures far from the crowds, every stop felt chosen just for us. • 🏰 Immersive Storytelling: Dave invited us to imagine life 600, 800, even more than 2,000 years ago, walking in the footsteps of the ancient ones, inviting us to time travel into the past. • 🐑 Unique Access: We crossed sheep and cow pastures to reach breathtaking ruins — often with no one else in sight. • 🌞 Caring for All Ages: He balanced the needs of seniors and toddlers with the curiosity of teens and adults. • 💚 Heart & Soul of Ireland: Dave knew just where to stop and where to spend our money to positively impact the local families. The few days we spent without Dave at the start and end of our trip were fine, but the days we had with him? Unforgettable. Remarkable. Amazing. Dave’s breadth and depth of knowledge is astounding — but what sets him apart is his heart. Outside of being a phenomenal guide, he’s a genuinely good person: he cares deeply for the environment, is a devoted family man, and carries immense pride in his Irish heritage. 11 out of 10 — I’ve recommended Dave to all my family and friends who want to explore Ireland intimately, with humor, culture, and care. This was a personalized private tour, and I imagine a shared tour would feel different — but if you can, give yourself the gift of a trip with Dave. If you want an Ireland experience that’s rich, personal, and unforgettable — where you connect deeply with the land, the culture, and the stories — Dave is the one to take you there.

The Wolfhound Tour in the Southwest of Ireland was the best family vacation of our lives. Dave was so knowledgeable on the history and wildlife of this region. We had a large family group of 11 with a range of ages from 8-70. Dave was so accommodating and flexible. Our trip was well organized and so much fun! Dave knew the best places to visit. Went kayaking in the Barra Peninsula, walked through the Heeley Pass, visited Kenmare, Ring of Kerry, Dingle, Killarney National Park, Gougone Barra Forest, Muckross House and Abbey, Valentia Island, and so much more. Dave even added a stop to the Skelling Chocolate Factory for the kids and taught them Hurling and how to play Gaelic Football. This trip far exceeded our expectations and we would recommend the Wolfhound Tours to anyone wanting to experience Ireland to its fullest. Thanks Dave for the best family vacation of our lives. We are forever grateful for this experience.
