Located near the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Kaudulla National Park is one of three national parks and one eco park in the region, offering a remarkable opportunity to witness Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity. Known for hosting the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the region, Kaudulla is a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Elephants can be seen throughout most of the year, moving between the nearby parks depending on the season. In addition to elephants, Kaudulla is home to 23 species of mammals, including Sambar Deer, Sri Lankan Axis Deer, Chevrotain, Wild Boar, and on rare occasions, elusive predators such as Leopards and Sloth Bears.
Bird watchers will be equally delighted, as the park is a haven for over 160 bird species, including large water birds like the Spot-billed Pelican and Lesser Adjutant. Other commonly sighted species include the Asian Spoonbill, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Black-headed Ibis, Painted Stork, and Openbill Stork. The park skies are often graced by majestic raptors such as the Peacock, Eagle, and the native Giant Eagle. Whether you're exploring the lush forests, wetlands, or open grasslands, Kaudulla offers an unforgettable safari experience in the heart of Sri Lanka’s natural wilderness.

We'd originally booked our safari with Minneriya Safari Tours to go to Minneriya, However, a few days before the trip they got in touch to suggest that we change to Kaudulla as the elephants were to be found there instead. We did as they advised and weren't disappointed. Over the 3-hour afternoon trip, we saw around 200 elephants in total, in various locations around the park. Our driver was careful and accommodating of our requests to stop for photographs. He stopped the engine whenever we paused for photos, which was great, both for reducing the camera shake and also the noise in the park. Our guide was good at spotting wildlife other than elephants and pointed out many different species of birds, as well as water buffalo, a golden mongoose, and a couple of crocodiles.

In July-August time kaudulla becomes tge best safari to see elephants. There are huge number of elephants around the tank and they seems very familiar. We went on August 10 th and it was soo crowded with safari jeeps. Yet there were so many elephants. Kaudulla safaris rest area is very nice and relaxing too. You can see the reservour while having a seat in pavillion listning to birds music. 😌😌

One of the best experiences and worth the money! Best time to go is afternoon, after 1pm, that’s when elephants come out. The jeep picked us up From the hotel (stayed at sigirya), it was like a 35mins drive to the park. The driver helps you with the tickets, expect to wait for 20-30mins based on the crowd. It was crowded when we went but we still got a good experience. Charith was our Jeep safari guide. The elephants are lovely, you’ll see many of them, one of the best experiences. It’s best to be quite when your near the elephants, some of the visitors did make noise which wasn’t good because it raises tension for the elephants and they could just run Away or towards.. so best to enjoy quietly!!

Nice park to see elephants and some birds. Depending on the season, elephants move from closeby to Minneriya to Kaudulla. All safari drivers know it and they will take you to the best place. I paid Rs. 14k for a private safari tour for about 4 hours and they picked me from my hotel in Sigiriya. You need to enter the part around 2 or 3 pm and they close the park by 6 pm. There was a huge queue to buy tickets and we waited for nearly 1.5 hours. Later learnt one ticket machine is not functioning.

Nice park to observe wild elephants. Sometimes hundreds of them. We visited the park in the morning time around 7 & there were around 50 elephants in the lake. You can see more in the evening time but it is much rush with safari jeeps too at that time. Morning is cool & quite with less no of jeeps. There are lavatory facilities at the entrance.
