The name of the neighborhood, Trastevere, literally means Beyond the Tiber. In ancient times, it was home to Jews and freedmen, creating a vibrant community rich in history and culture. Today, Trastevere remains one of Romes most charming and historic neighborhoods, filled with narrow cobbled streets, hidden corners, and legends waiting to be discovered. This tour begins by exploring the unique curiosities of the area, taking visitors through its ancient lanes and uncovering stories that have shaped the neighborhood over centuries. The journey includes a visit to the basements of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, where the remains of a Republican-era neighborhood are preserved among amphorae, mosaics, and the foundations of Roman domus, offering a rare glimpse into everyday life in ancient Rome.
The adventure continues to the basements of San Nicola in Carcere, one of the earliest Christian churches, where the layers of history reveal the remains of three pagan temples beneath the church. Crossing the Tiber River, the tour reaches the enchanting Tiber Island, a site historically dedicated to medicine. Here, visitors can see the remnants of an ancient ship and learn about the origins of the Fate Bene Fratelli hospital, which still stands today. This experience blends archaeology, history, and legend, making it accessible and engaging for everyone while offering a deep and memorable insight into one of Romes most fascinating neighborhoods.

Marcel

Very nice basilica in the centre of Rome. It's situated at a square and bit more in the quiet and older part of Rome. Access to the basilica is free of charge. When we visited (January) there was some work ongoing inside but that should not stop you from visiting.

The Basilica of Santa Maria is absolutely stunning. From the intricate mosaics to the grand interior, every detail reflects centuries of history and devotion. Peaceful yet awe-inspiring, it’s one of the most beautiful churches in Rome and well worth the visit.

This church is really beautiful. The inside is amazing and has so many lovely details—it honestly felt like a special, peaceful moment just being there. I took my time looking around and really enjoyed the atmosphere. I also liked that there’s a small souvenir shop inside, which was a nice surprise and a great way to remember the visit. Definitely worth stopping by.

A spectacular Roman gem and traditionally regarded as one of the earliest Christian places of worship in Rome, with a foundation possibly dating to the 3rd century. The dazzling golden mosaics on the façade and apse are the absolute highlight, especially as the evening light hits them. The ancient columns taken from the Baths of Caracalla also add incredible historic weight. A truly beautiful and central piece of the Trastevere neighborhood.
Jean

Located on the lively Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, this church is one of the oldest in Rome and a true gem of the Trastevere district, known for its authentic Roman atmosphere. Originally founded in the 3rd century and rebuilt in the 12th century, it beautifully combines history, art, and spirituality. The golden mosaics on the façade immediately catch the eye, while the Romanesque bell tower overlooks the bustling square. Inside, visitors can admire the magnificent medieval mosaics by Pietro Cavallini, depicting the Virgin Mary crowned by Christ — a masterpiece of Byzantine-inspired art. The ancient marble columns, taken from old Roman temples, add to the church’s timeless charm. Santa Maria in Trastevere is both a spiritual haven and a vibrant cultural stop, perfect for discovering the heart and soul of the Trastevere neighborhood
