The tour begins with a visit to the renowned Parmigiano Reggiano factory, where a guide will provide a brief historical overview of this iconic cheese. Your journey starts at the casello, the heart of the production, where milk is cooked in traditional caldere to create the Parmigiano Reggiano. During the visit, you’ll explore the brine room and aging room, where you’ll have the rare opportunity to beat the cheese just like experts at the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium. The experience concludes with a delightful tasting of three different ages of Parmigiano Reggiano, paired with local red wine and other traditional Parmesan products, allowing you to savor the rich, complex flavors that develop over time.

Next, the tour continues to the Parma Ham factory, where you’ll learn about the meticulous process behind crafting the world famous Prosciutto di Parma. The guide will offer insights into the history and traditions of this delicacy before taking you through the cold stage, where the finest fresh meats are selected for processing. You’ll observe the salting machines and refrigeration cells, which ensure the hams are prepared to perfection. The tour proceeds to the seasoning rooms, where you’ll be enveloped by the enticing aroma of the aging hams. You’ll also witness the spillatura process, where the hams are branded with the iconic Corona di Parma, a mark of excellence. The Parma Ham experience concludes with a tasting of the finest prosciutto, accompanied by a glass of local Malvasia wine, enhancing the flavors of this exquisite delicacy.

To cap off the tour, you’ll visit the stunning Torrechiara Castle, one of northern Italy’s most beautiful castles, offering breathtaking views and a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich history and architecture. This combination of culinary delights and cultural heritage makes for an unforgettable experience in the heart of Parma.

Beautiful and well-maintained castle on top of a hill. Its walls and buildings are amazing and it has beautiful views on the countryside. The interior has some great rooms with great affresco. The €8 entry fee is quite worth it. Do note there a very small parking at the top, but it’s for just a few cars. The main parking is at the bottom of the small hill and you need to walk ~7 minutes uphill to reach it. Worth a visit!

Excellent views and the interior of the rooms were beautiful. The only downside for me was that with the exception of some displays of armor, all the rooms were empty. Still an amazing place though.

Castello di Torrechiara is incredible. Built in the 1400s by Pier Maria Rossi as both a fortress and a love story for Bianca Pellegrini, it has been beautifully preserved. Walking through the frescoed halls and the famous Golden Chamber is a real highlight. The tour lasts about 45 minutes to an hour which is just the right amount of time to take it all in. What makes the visit even better is the small village that sits right on the castle property up the hill. There is a restaurant, wine tasting, and a few places to relax, and it feels like stepping back into another time. The combination of the castle and the little hamlet makes this well worth the drive from Parma and a perfect way to spend part of the day.

Castello di Torrechiara, perched atop a hill in the Parma valley near Langhirano, is an evocative blend of medieval strength and Renaissance elegance. The castle was constructed between 1448 and 1460 by Pier Maria Rossi, a prominent nobleman and military leader, as both a defensive fortress and a romantic residence for his beloved Bianca Pellegrini. Its location was originally strategic, commanding sweeping views over the Parma river and the rolling hills embroidered with vineyards, but today it serves as a breathtaking panoramic backdrop for visitors. The castle’s architecture is striking, with four imposing towers connected by double walls adorned with battlements. At its heart lies the Cortile d’Onore, a grand courtyard that now hosts cultural events and summer performances. The interiors, while largely unfurnished, are richly decorated with frescoes. The most famous is the Camera d’Oro, or Golden Chamber, where scenes celebrate the love between Pier Maria and Bianca, depicted in a cycle of frescoes attributed to Benedetto Bembo. These artworks are considered among the finest examples of Renaissance bedchamber decoration in Italy. Exploring the castle, visitors can admire a series of halls and rooms featuring grotesque, naturalistic, and fantastical motifs. The patrol walkways and underground dungeons, occasionally open to the public, offer a glimpse into the castle’s defensive past. Castello di Torrechiara is not only a monument to military architecture but also a testament to enduring romance and artistic achievement. Its accessibility from Parma makes it a popular day trip, and the surrounding countryside, famed for its food and wine, adds to the allure. The castle stands out as one of Emilia-Romagna’s most beautiful and well-preserved fortresses, offering visitors a captivating journey through history, art, and legend. The adjacent medieval village, nestled within the castle’s outer walls, retains its original layout and provides a charming setting for a stroll.

Castello di Torrechiara is the kind of castle that makes your jaw drop before you've even stepped inside. Perched high above the Parma Valley, its honey-colored stone walls, perfectly preserved towers, and commanding views feel lifted straight from a Renaissance painting. The setting is cinematic, and the approach alone is worth the visit. Inside, the castle continues to impress with beautifully frescoed rooms, especially the famous Camera d'Oro-a stunning tribute to courtly love, lined with golden light and richly symbolic detail. The blend of military architecture and romantic art is something truly unique. You can feel the story of Pier Maria Rossi and Bianca Pellegrini lingering in every corner. Whether you're here for the history, the art, or just the breathtaking views of vineyards and hills rolling into the distance, Torrechiara delivers on every front. It's one of the most captivating castles in Italy, and absolutely worth the journey to see it in person."
