Embark on a captivating journey through the natural and cultural heritage of Matera with this guided walking tour in the heart of the Regional Park of the Rupestrian Churches. Begin your adventure with a shared transfer from Matera’s city center to the Murgia plateau, a dramatic and rugged landscape recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This plateau, rich in archaeological significance and wild charm, is home to a network of ancient cave churches carved into the limestone rock. With the guidance of a knowledgeable local expert, follow scenic trails that wind through this historic terrain, uncovering stories of the monks, hermits, and early settlers who once inhabited the region’s remote grottos and lived in harmony with nature.
As you explore, step inside two extraordinary rupestrian churches—San Vito and Madonna delle Tre Porte—where vivid Byzantine frescoes dating from the 12th to 17th centuries offer a rare glimpse into the spiritual life of centuries past. The tour concludes at the breathtaking Belvedere viewpoint, where a sweeping vista of Matera's iconic Sassi districts awaits. As the sun sets over the ancient stone dwellings, casting golden light across the city’s terraces and rooftops, you’ll witness a view that perfectly captures the soul of this timeless place. Blending history, nature, and unforgettable scenery, this immersive experience is a must for curious minds and culture enthusiasts.

This tour was just the right amount of time and effort. Information given was of genuine interest and the guide very knowledgeable and paced the Tour at just the right rate. Was a little uncomfortable with the figurine sales pitch at the historic house built in the cave but accept this was the condition to access that interesting part of the Tour.

What a wonderful private walking tour we have had with Nico. Local Materian and Archaeologist with so much knowledge and so many stories to tell. 100% book with Nico and try and make this your starting point for an amazing Matera visit

Cannot recommend enough! This tour was highly informative and one of our favorite things we did in Matera. It was great to learn about the history of Matera and all that it’s been through. Our guide was absolutely wonderful and knowledgeable!!

My husband and I had a private tour around the Sassi di Matera, and it was a truly memorable experience. I highly recommend booking a tour with Nico—he knows the city inside out and showed us some hidden corners we would’ve never discovered on our own. His knowledge of Matera’s history and daily life in the caves brought everything to life. Without him, we wouldn’t have fully understood what living in the Sassi was really like.

Just completed a tour of Matera with this fantastic guide who knows the city and the Sassi inside and out. Worth the trip to Matera just to listen to and learn from this man. Highly recommend
